Dr. Leo Gross

Leo Gross is a Principal Research Scientist at IBM Research in Zurich and Head of the Atom and Molecule Manipulation group. He studied physics at Freie Universität Berlin, Tulane University (New Orleans), and the University of Münster, and received his PhD in physics from Freie Universität Berlin in 2005. He joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in 2005 as a postdoctoral researcher in Gerhard Meyer’s group and has been a research staff member since 2009.

Leo Gross pioneered bond-resolved imaging of single molecules using atomic force microscopy (AFM). His work has advanced atom manipulation techniques for the construction of novel and elusive molecules. His research focuses on the development and application of AFM and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for molecular identification, characterization, on-surface synthesis, and the investigation of charge transfer processes at the atomic scale.
